Franklin D, impressive winner of the Betfred Mile at Glorious Goodwood last month, was euthanised on Wednesday morning after sustaining a serious injury during routine exercise in Newmarket.

Owned by Bill and Tim Gredley, Franklin D suffered a break to his hind leg when exercising and the loss of the progressive four-year-old left trainer Michael Bell, his team and the owners in a state of shock.

Bell said: "Unfortunately Franklin D broke a hind leg pastern this morning and couldn't be saved. It is very sad for all concerned.
