A second Group 1 success in 20 days has propelled Angel Bleu into contention for two-year-old colt of the year at the Cartier Racing Awards next month, public voting for which remains open at www.cartierracingawards.co.uk.

Ralph Beckett sent the son of Dark Angel back to Paris at the weekend where he added Criterium International success to his win in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp on Arc day.

Angel Bleu now forms part of a three-way tie at the head of the standings in that division alongside Perfect Power and Native Trail, both of whom also have two Group 1s to their record.

In a significant week for Europe's top two-year-olds Luxembourg also reinforced his credentials with a smooth success in the Vertem Futurity Stakes at Doncaster to cement his status as ante-post Epsom Derby favourite.

The Cedric Rossi-trained Skazino moved into second in the stayer of the year category after chasing home Scope in the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp on Sunday.

The Breeders' Cup at Del Mar over November 5 and 6 provides a late chance for certain horses to press their claim.

Cartier history features several award winners who sealed their success in the US, with Goldikova and Enable the most recent winners of Horse of the Year to be successful at the Breeders' Cup, a trend started 30 years ago with Arazi.

While the points earned throughout the season account for 40 per cent of Cartier's unique electoral college, there are still 30 per cent up for grabs each from the expert jury and from the public vote, which opened last week to readers of the Racing Post and the Daily Telegraph and which will close at midday on Tuesday November 2, eight days ahead of the awards ceremony at London's Dorchester Hotel.
