Sea-Bird's Derby commentary chart among Sir Peter O'Sullevan auction lots

One of Sir Peter O’Sullevan’s few remaining commentary charts for the 1965 Derby won by Sea-Bird is among eight fantastic auction lots at the annual lunch for the legendary caller's trust on Thursday.

The lunch is the main fundraising initiative for the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust, which is celebrating its silver anniversary having staged its first lunch in 1997.

A bronze in the shape of O’Sullevan’s racing binoculars sculpted by Janie Beardsall is awarded each year to a person who has made a lifetime’s contribution to the sport.

Jessica Harrington was last year’s recipient and other winners include Aidan O’Brien, Sir Anthony McCoy, JP McManus and the late Sir Henry Cecil.

This year’s award will go to John Magnier, with O’Sullevan asking his trustees before his death to present the 25th award to the Coolmore founder as he considered Magnier’s contribution to the sport and the breed as equally momentous.

A four-person VIP visit to Ballydoyle and Coolmore, including a two-night stay with dinner and bed and breakfast at the Cashel Palace Hotel, is another exclusive lot in the auction to take place during the lunch at the Dorchester Hotel in London.

Hospitality for 12 guests in a box at Goodwood on one of four racedays next year, a VIP day for six at the Curragh on the second day of Irish Champions Weekend in September, and a Terence Gilbert painting of Lester Piggott sporting Nijinsky’s silks and surrounded by the colours of his other eight Derby winners are other lots on offer.

Goffs' executive director Nick Nugent will be the auctioneer for the lots, including a Johnny Jonas portrait of the award winner Magnier.

The trust supports six charities – Blue Cross, Brooke, Compassion In World Farming, World Horse Welfare, Racing Welfare and the British Thoroughbred Retraining Centre – and has distributed more than £5 million.
