Scottish trainer Scott stars in BBC documentary

Borders trainer Katie Scott and everyone at her Galashiels yard will be glued to the television on Monday for the start of a new six-part BBC Scotland series.

The 28-year-old is one of the stars of The River, a fly-on-the-wall documentary based on the lives of people and businesses around the River Tweed.

The BBC cameras followed Scott at her scenic Stables Cottage yard for eight months, through rain and shine and the odd snowy morning on the gallops, to capture the trials and tribulations of jump racing.

"I think they were quite keen to have someone young and starting out to give a different perspective as everyone is used to seeing the big trainers but you rarely see what goes on in the little yards," she said.

"We thought it would be strange having the film crew in, but once they were here they slotted in and we're that busy we just cracked on."

Scott attended the programme launch last week and was happy with the end result.

"It was a good experience and hopefully it's good publicity," said the trainer, who has built up her string to 11 since taking out a full licence in February 2015.

"We've seen one episode which we featured quite heavily in and although I didn't enjoy watching and listening to myself, as I realised how strong an accent I had, it did show the yard in its true light," she added.

With the importance of horses in the region reflected throughout the series, the Duke of Roxburghe's Floors Stud, situated close to Kelso racecourse, also features strongly.

Monday's first episode chronicles the stud's first home birth for several years, and later the cameras follow the team to Newmarket for the sale of a foal out of the duke's 1,000 Guineas winner Attraction by Frankel.

The River is on BBC1 Scotland at 7.30pm on Monday and viewers outside Scotland can watch it on digital satellite channel 960 or via the BBC iPlayer.
