Sandown stars: three runners to get excited about away from the Coral-Eclipse
The second day of Sandown's Coral-Eclipse fixture will be dominated by the Group 1 centrepiece, but plenty of quality can be expected elsewhere on a card containing the Group 3 Coral Charge, a pair of Listed contests and a competitive mile handicap. Here are three runners to get excited about away from the Coral-Eclipse itself.
Sergei Prokofiev
Group 3 Coral Charge
1.50 Sandown
The Aidan O'Brien-trained Sergei Prokofiev has not had things go entirely his way since a winning return at Navan in March.
The three-year-old was caught too far back when favourite in the Palace House Stakes and suffered a similar scenario in the King's Stand Stakes, where few got into the Royal Ascot Group 1.
It leaves him with questions to answer but he could well do that in the Coral Charge, a less competitive race in which his class and potential could shine through. He has been installed as the ante-post favourite at prices ranging from 5-2 to 7-2.
Beyond Reason
Listed Coral Distaff
3.00 Sandown
Enable could make her seasonal reappearance in the Coral-Eclipse but 35 minutes prior could mark Beyond Reason's comeback. The Godolphin filly was smart as a two-year-old, winning three times including back-to-back Group 3 and Group 2 victories at Deauville.
Charlie Appleby put the Australia filly into Group 1 territory for her last two runs as a juvenile, where she performed okay to finish sixth in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh before showing a tad less when seventh in the Fillies' Mile at Newmarket.
This mile Listed contest, for which she has been installed as a general 11-4 shot, would represent a feasible starting point to Beyond Reason's three-year-old campaign and if she lines up, she will likely have a big say.
Cleonte
Listed Coral Marathon
4.45 Sandown
King Power Racing's first winner at Royal Ascot could bid to add a second Listed win to his CV in the Coral Marathon over two miles.
Cleonte showed stamina is clearly his forte when sticking on best to win the Queen Alexandra Stakes from Pallasator, last year's winner of the royal meeting's finale.
Andrew Balding has won this race twice in the last eight years with Chiberta King (2011) and Havana Beat (2014) and will be hoping the six-year-old, a 9-2 shot in the ante-post market, can add to his useful record in the race.
