Davy Russell has promised anyone who makes their way to Newbridge next Tuesday evening for the sixth running of the Hurling For Cancer match at St Conleth's Park that “they will have a bit of craic all in aid of a good cause.”

The Cork native heads the jockeys team who for the first time got the better of the trainers, fronted by legendary trainer Jim Bolger, a year ago.

The event has raised on average over €100,000 per running and this year it will feature the likes of sports broadcasters Colm O’Rourke, Joe Brolly and Peter Canavan, top racing personalities Katie Walsh, Rich Ricci and Kevin Manning while former Republic Of Ireland international Niall Quinn is also expected to make an appearance.

Russell said: “The Hurling For Cancer event is always great fun and I would urge anyone to come down and give their support on Tuesday. It’s great craic and it’s all in aid of a brilliant cause."

Keen to beat Bolger’s team for the second year in a row, Russell added: “We have many of the familiar faces back again and hopefully we have a couple of aces up our sleeve as well. The game always starts off as a bit of fun but it doesn’t be long about heating up and we want to win it, for sure.

“It’s amazing really what a game of hurling can do and hopefully we will enjoy more of the same come Tuesday.”
