British trainers have nominated more than 150 juveniles they believe should be exempt from elimination from heavily subscribed races in the opening week of June to enhance their chances of a run at Royal Ascot.

Last week, the BHA widened its elimination scheme for two-year-olds aimed at Royal Ascot so that trainers who would not previously have been considered a priority – based on their recent record in juvenile races at the meeting – could nominate one horse for exemption.

Trainers were given until Tuesday to put forward runners and the list of prioritised horses was published on Wednesday. It includes 163 horses from 89 trainers, with 23 of them permitted to nominate more than one runner.

Mark Johnston, who trained the winner of last year's Queen Mary Stakes, one of six juvenile contests at the royal meeting, has made 11 nominations, three more than Charlie Appleby and Richard Fahey.

Fahey's five two-year-old entries at Newcastle on Tuesday – Internationaldream, Patsy Fagan, Strike Red, Double Dealing and Imperial Butterfly – appear on the list.

Archie Watson, who trained 71 two-year-old winners last season, has made seven nominations along with Richard Hannon and John Gosden.

When asked about his single allocation, Charlie Fellowes, who has nominated Susan Roy's Kodiac colt Golden Bear, said: "What other people have been allocated is not our concern.

"I'm certainly not feeling aggrieved and after a quick scan there are no big surprises.

"We've made our allocation so happy days. We're hopeful he does well and can run at Ascot later in the month. The BHA has done the right thing giving every trainer a slot. I felt first-season trainers would have really missed out had they stuck to the original system."

Some of the nominated horses appear among 115 entries for the first three juvenile contests at Kempton and Newcastle on Tuesday. They rely on government approval to resume racing next week.

Fifteen of the 33 entries for Wednesday's sole two-year-old race – the five-furlong British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Auction Stakes (2.00 Yarmouth) – were also nominated.

The elimination sequence for those races is also expected to be published on Thursday morning in line with the usual procedure.

Godolphin pair among favourites to land Royal Ascot juvenile races

Bookmakers Fitzdares have made two Godolphin two-year-olds and an unraced John Gosden-trained colt the 4-1 co-favourites to win any race at Royal Ascot next month.

The firm, keen to drum up interest in the juvenile events off the back of the nominations published on Thursday by the BHA, have singled out Fast Start (Saeed bin Suroor), Saeiqa (John Gosden) and Sky Angel (Charlie Appleby) as the market leaders.
