Roger Varian loses two Listed winners as extent of feed contamination revealed
France Galop has published the full details of 12 horses who tested positive for the banned substance Zilpaterol in a case that led to the dramatic 11th-hour scratching of Aidan O'Brien's four runners in this year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
Roger Varian was the only trainer outside France to have runners test positive and has been stripped of two Listed contests at Longchamp in September with the disqualifications of Angel Power and Queen Daenerys.
Six individual trainers were cleared of any wrongdoing as the positives were all linked to a contaminated batch of horse feed products from the Irish manufacturer Gain Equine Nutrition. No fines have been imposed with each trainer being deemed the victim of "exceptional circumstances".
