Riders Paddy Kennedy and Eoin Mahon hospitalised after suffering facial injuries
Jump jockeys Eoin Mahon and Paddy Kennedy have been hospitalised after suffering facial injuries on Sunday, with the pair to remain under observation for the coming days.
Mahon, a 25-year-old amateur, was injured in a fall at Grennan point-to-point near Thomastown, County Kilkenny after his mount Leading Babe unseated at the second fence on her debut.
He was airlifted to Tallaght University Hospital after receiving treatment on course, with the decision taken to abandon the remaining four races left on the card after the rider reportedly sustained a number of fractures.
Meanwhile at Punchestown, Kennedy was brought down aboard 100-1 chance Lady De Vesci in an incident that saw five of a 20-strong mares' maiden hurdle field exit at the first flight.
IHRB senior medical officer Dr Jennifer Pugh said on Monday: "Both riders suffered facial injuries yesterday. Paddy remains in Naas Hospital and Eoin is in Tallaght. Both are clinically stable and will remain in hospital for further observation and treatment over the coming days."
The other four riders involved in the Punchestown incident – Rachael Blackmore, who was stood down for the rest of the afternoon, Kevin Sexton, Ian Power and Conor McNamara – are understood to have emerged from the incident unscathed.
Kennedy, the 32-year-old brother of leading rider Jack, enjoyed his best season yet in Ireland last term with 18 winners, including a Grade 2 success aboard the Jessica Harrington-trained Ashdale Bob.
Half of Mahon's ten winners under rules have come for south Galway neighbour Brian McMahon.
Mahon's biggest victory came in the 2019 Punchestown Amateur National Handicap Chase aboard McMahon's Se Mo Laoch, and he has also registered 16 winners between the flags since his first in 2016.
