Sandra Hughes, who announced her intention to retire from training during the Punchestown festival last month, will have her last runner at Down Royal on Friday and is to take up a role with Roscommon racecourse on June 12, looking after owners and sponsors.

Michael Finneran, manager of Roscommon, said: “We see it as an important role and now that Sandra's handing in her licence we were keen to offer it to her. She brings a huge amount of experience with her, and looking after sponsors and owners is something that needs to be done."

Hughes, an Irish Grand National and Grade 1-winning trainer, said: “I wasn’t sure what I was going to do once the horses left the yard. I was very keen to remain in racing and this role came up at the perfect time for me.

"I’ve always loved going racing to Roscommon. There’s always a wonderful atmosphere there and the fixtures are always well-attended. I’ll do my very best to make it a success and ensure that sponsors and owners are well looked after."
