Winter made for a mile but Rhododendron preps for Oaks

Unlike the 2,000 Guineas, the fillies' equivalent was run at a fierce gallop, but there was still a potential hard luck story as favourite Rhododendron was denied a clear passage before staying on behind stablemate Winter.

Whether the pair will meet again must be debatable as Winter looks a smart miler with speed to burn and a pedigree to match whilst Rhododendron ran what looked a cracking trial for the Investec Oaks.

The Irish 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes would seem a natural path for Winter, who was warm in the preliminaries and edged to her right coming out of the dip.

Rhododendron, conceding race fitness to her stablemate, looks altogether a more well-balanced filly who should handle Epsom.

There is more evidence in her pedigree than Winter's to suggest the 1m4f trip will suit and, although the 3-1 initially offered was soon snapped up, the 5-2 for the Oaks remains tempting.
