An afternoon at Ascot when it was hard to believe the evidence of one’s own eyes for the simple reason there was no evidence. Nobody saw Swinley’s bottom all day.

Years ago you would say that a blanket of fog had descended on the course now you would have to say it was a duvet. Domestic experience suggests that duvets suddenly disappear as if by magic until grumpily hauled back, but on this occasion the fog persisted stubbornly.

Jump racing is a wonderful spectacle but somehow some of the excitement and most of thrill goes on the missing list when you can’t see it.
