Which juveniles impressed on Saturday with a view to this autumn and beyond?

'The way he stayed on suggests he could get an extra furlong'

Blackbeard has been on the go since April, competing in eight races, and his experience shone through in the Middle Park. You can't help but be impressed by his professional manner – at least once he enters the stalls.

The way he stayed on in the final furlong suggests he could get an extra furlong, which makes the Dewhurst an option (although Ballydoyle also have Auguste Rodin for that) and he has more solid form than Sakheer, the favourite for that race.

A mile may prove a stretch next year (his sire No Nay Never hasn't produced many milers) but Blackbeard owes connections nothing after a terrific juvenile campaign.

'Crypto Force arguably has more to give'

Much is made of Blackbeard's circus antics pre-race but he has never given trouble going into the stalls and never gives Ryan Moore the slightest headache in a race.

Aidan O'Brien didn't seem keen to go to the well again this year and there was just a hint in his post-race comments that Blackbeard might be considered for stallion duties sooner rather than later.

Lezoo was electric in the Cheveley Park off what Ralph Beckett admitted was a pretty light preparation. The problem is there is now nowhere to go with her that would add to her reputation this year, while her trainer admits she looks very unlikely to stay a mile at three.

In winning the Beresford, Crypto Force achieved the least of the three, beating Adelaide River, whose previous effort at Group level resulted in a narrow defeat in France.

But off a lengthy break and on just his third start, Crypto Force was stepping up considerably – remember he beat an unlucky Auguste Rodin on his debut – and the son of Time Test arguably has more to give.

'We might have seen both Guineas winners'

As good as Blackbeard and Lezoo were at Newmarket on Saturday, the two juveniles to take from the Cambridgeshire meeting ran earlier in the week.

Blackbeard and Lezoo look like top-notch sprinters for next year, whereas Rockfel winner Commissioning and Tattersalls Stakes scorer Nostrum are surely genuine Classic contenders.

Both were impressive winners over seven furlongs, both will get a mile no problem and both may well get even further next season. It's not impossible we saw both next season's Guineas winners and, particularly with Commissioning, we may well have seen a live contender for Epsom.
