'When I got there I asked her to go and she just flew'

Frankie Dettori on how he won a record-breaking fifth Arc on Enable

Before the race I was toying with the idea of making the running, but I was aware Idaho, Capri and Order Of St George are good stayers.

There’s a little tower by the 2,000-metre mark and that was my first marker. I said to John [Gosden]: "I have 400 metres to really find out what’s going to happen."

I went to make the running but I saw Idaho was running free so let him slot in. Then I could see Order Of St George breathing down my quarters, so I checked behind him and there was plenty of room. I managed to drag her back and get behind Order Of St George.

At that moment I was exactly where I wanted her to be, with free air on my left. It got to the point where I was actually running away around the bend. I was striking Order Of St George’s heels; I was going that well and I could see distress signals from the one in front.

I thought at York I perhaps went a little too soon so I counted to ten. I couldn’t wait to get to the 400-metre mark and when I got there I asked her to go and she just flew. She’s got a burst of three or four lengths and then she sustains it.

When we plateaued at that speed I was just counting the furlong discs, two, then one, and it was so smooth and so effortless.

Enable deserves all the credit. She is the best filly I've ever ridden and John is a genius. He kept her at absolutely top shape all year.

I'm the first jockey to get to five Arc wins and I'm very proud of today – it hasn't sunk in yet. I’m looking forward to a nice glass of something tonight.
