What A Welcome defies the handicapper with fifth win of the season

Not many horses manage to defy the handicapper for a whole season, but What A Welcome is threatening to do just that after the four-year-old added a fifth win this year in thrilling fashion.

Trainer Patrick Chamings and jockey Joey Haynes are living the dream with the Nathaniel gelding after his latest win in the Victoria Racing Club Handicap, which officially confirmed his two-stone improvement from his first win in an apprentice handicap at Newbury in May.

The only blot on his record came on firm ground at Ascot in July, but Chamings is hoping an autumnal finish to the season will continue the story on easier terrain and over longer distances.
