Seven-runner Group 1s are not meant to be that complex or that messy but the Sussex Stakes was an absolute corker because of it.

Gaining a length on the field right out of the stalls you would never have guessed the hard luck Kameko was about to endure. Sat perfectly on the heels of the leaders in fourth you would never have suspected Mohaather would have to drop to last to get out. Settled in the rear Siskin looked to have a lot to do. It turned out he was probably best positioned of the lot – such is Group 1 racing.

Ryan Moore chasing Circus Maximus into the lead up the hill was the race-changing moment. From there good positions became bad. With Vatican City on his flank and Wichita in his slipstream the two horses inside them, Kameko and Mohaather, were suddenly trapped in a pocket.
