'We've always had high hopes' - joy for Grant Tuer on mixed day at Carlisle
Friday: Carlisle
Grant Tuer was pleased to get a win on the board with Vince Lombardi in the 6f handicap but rued the missed opportunity of striking a double on the card.
Prior to the three-year-old's win, market leader Sophia's Starlight had to be withdrawn from the 6f novice after breaking free from the stalls and running off.
"It was very disappointing because she’s always good in the stalls at home and she was good on her debut," Tuer said.
"We didn’t see it coming, but she was fine afterwards and we live to fight another day."
However, Tuer was able to smile after the next race when Vince Lombardi registered a first victory since joining his yard this year.
"He’s a nice horse and we’ve always had high hopes for him. I’ve always thought he’s been well handicapped, but we've fluffed our lines a little bit," the trainer said.
"I dropped him back to six furlongs, but he’s bred for a mile and a quarter and we may try seven with him again.
"His run at Haydock was promising, but we were drawn widest and we tucked in at the back in what was a really slow seven furlongs. The standard of that race was completely different to the standard we’ve just won."
Frequent winner
Less than 24 hours after scoring at Leicester, Temper Trap was back in the winner's enclosure for Tim Easterby after landing division two of the mile handicap by a neck.
It was a fourth win in five starts since July 30 for the five-year-old, who completed a double for Easterby and jockey Sean Kirrane.
The pair were also on target with Saleet, who recorded a first career win in the 6f fillies’ novice.
