'We should have a fun autumn' - Fellowes eyeing big targets for Atrium
Friday: Newbury
Charlie Fellowes has identified two potential valuable handicaps for Atrium following his second success of the campaign.
The Highclere-owned three-year-old produced a powerful turn of foot on the near-side rail to finish one and a quarter lengths clear of Auditor in the mile handicap.
"He’s a cracking horse, very consistent, and he’s only going to get better as the ground softens," said Fellowes.
"All of his best form has been when there’s been a little bit of cut in the ground and we should have a fun autumn. I’ll be disappointed if there’s not more to come.
"I have put him in the Cambridgeshire as I wanted to have the option, but I’m not sure if a mile and a furlong at Newmarket would suit him. A longer-term target might be the Balmoral."
Atrium, who finished 13th in the Britannia at Royal Ascot, was last seen when sixth behind Tempus – who has since gone on to win the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury – in a mile handicap at Ascot.
"After his run at Ascot I was going to give him some time off but he gets so fresh so quickly and you’re better off just running him," said Fellowes.
"Tempus won nicely that day and has backed it up since, but our lad did well to finish as closely as he did to him."
Ghiani shoots
Marco Ghiani celebrated a 66-1 double, headlined by Bell Shot in the 7f handicap for Charlie Hills.
The jockey started the day well when 18-1 shot Zouky made a winning start to her career when taking the 6f fillies’ stakes.
