'We never thought she'd win a race' - seven heaven as Peltwell wins again
Sunday: Southwell
The remarkable run of the Neil Mulholland-trained Peltwell continued as Sam Twiston-Davies guided the mare to a seventh win in a row in the feature 2me mares’ handicap hurdle.
The eight-year-old, who failed to win on her first nine starts, began the winning sequence off a mark of 82 at Wincanton under Millie Wonnacott and still looked ahead of the handicapper as she cruised to a five-and-half-length win off 116.
Peltwell, who has also won for Danny McMenamin, Shane Quinlan and Tom Scudamore, followed up her most recent win at Hereford, when Twiston-Davies had done the honours.
The feat is all more astonishing given that the wins have come at different tracks, and Jo Bridel could not hide her amazement at the improvement of her mother’s horse when speaking to Sky Sports Racing.
Bridel said: "Sammy [Twiston-Davies] was just saying about 18 months ago when he rode her at Chepstow we never thought she’d win a race!
"I was there at Hereford the last time and when the handicapper put her up 5lb, then we sort of thought maybe the handicapper's had his way."
Bridel, who owns the talented Milkwood with Mullholland, explained that her mother, who is in her nineties, was watching on from home.
"She’s owned a few horses but she’s never had one who’s won two on the trot, let alone seven," said Bridel. "Peltwell might have to go over fences soon."
Keighley closes in
Martin Keighley is within touching distance of a career-best season after combining with James Best for a double.
Mozzaro followed up his win on his chasing debut at the track last month in the 3m2f handicap chase before Brianna Rose delivered on her promising bumper form to get off the mark over hurdles at the second time of asking.
A good afternoon’s work took Keighley to 33 winners for the season, one short of his best haul of 34 in 2011-12.
