Plenty in the sport are well aware of the ups and downs of racing and owner Phil Simmonds, shellshocked by the death of one of his horses last year, enjoyed a timely boost when Walt waltzed home in Kempton's £100,000 handicap chase.

The race, now staged under the banner of 888Sport, used to be known as the Racing Post Chase and went the way of the Neil Mulholland stable two years ago when Pilgrims Bay struck.

Repeating the trick under a fine Sam Twiston-Davies ride was Walt, lurking at the bottom of the weights, but coming out right on top.
