Roger Varian may not have visited Leicester Cathedral to see the tomb of Richard III but was saying his prayers at halfway in the Listed feature of the same name when his market leader Emmaus was stone last.

The scenario was all part of a plan by jockey Andrea Atzeni, however, to repeat previous tactics on the horse he had won on twice before at the same track.

The 9-4 chance came late to catch Donjuan Triumphant, who was a popular choice as he was carrying the blue and white silks of Leicester City, albeit the local football team did not then distinguish themselves when walloped 5-0 at Crystal Palace.
