'I haven't been too happy for a long time now' - Dale Irving retires from riding

The day at Kelso started in unexpected fashion as conditional rider Dale Irving gave up his two rides and immediately retired from riding, citing a loss of confidence in the saddle.

Irving was only three wins away from riding out his claim and had been due to ride Dolly Dancer and Camile on the eight-race card before withdrawing in the morning, although he will remain in racing in his new role as assistant to Cumbrian trainer Maurice Barnes.

"I haven't been too happy for a long time now and haven't been riding with as much confidence in myself as I used to," Irving explained.
