As De Mee saved face for the Paul Nicholls team after a misbehaving stablemate threatened to ruin the ten-time champion trainer’s day.

Give Me A Copper, a 30-100 chance to land the novice chase, let the side down badly when jinking and unseating his rider, but the 732-mile round trip from Somerset proved to be worthwhile when As De Mee showed his staying qualities 35 minutes later in the £22,500 feature race.

The 3m2f handicap chase was won 12 months ago by One For Arthur on the way to Grand National glory, and the Aintree spectacular is now a possible target for As De Mee.
