There will be no Ladbrokes St Leger for Ulysses, who left his Derby running well behind with a smooth half-length defeat of The Major General in a trial that has gone to the subsequent winner of the final Classic four times in the last 20 years.

Sir Michael Stoute has no intention of stepping the impeccably bred Niarchos family-owned colt up in trip for a race in which he would have to be supplemented in any case, and instead said he is more likely to drop him back to a mile and a quarter.

As a product of Derby winner Galileo and Oaks heroine Light Shift, Ulysses has had much to live up to, but such was the style of his maiden win at Newbury that he went off a mere 8-1 chance at Epsom, only to suffer bad luck in running and finish 12th.
