Disappointed connections of Un De Sceaux were left rueing their choice of tactics after the 12-year-old was humbled by an imperious Defi Du Seuil in the Matchbook Clarence House Chase at Ascot on Saturday.

As has been customary over his remarkable career, the popular chaser jumped into an early lead under Paul Townend and attempted to put pressure on his rival, who was only a neck his better in the Tingle Creek at Sandown in December.

Yet despite several awesome leaps, Un De Sceaux had no response to the winner's decisive turn of foot after the second-last and trainer Willie Mullins was left frustrated that the contest was not more competitive.
