Sunny summer racedays in the holiday season are rarely sombre occasions but the sad news on the eve of racing certainly cast a shadow.

There was a minute's silence for Tom O'Ryan, whose flat cap was almost part of the furniture at Catterick and numerous other courses, and jockeys wore black armbands to mark his death at the age of 61.

And after scoring with An Fear Ciuin, Richard Ford was keener to pay tribute to the former jockey, journalist and broadcaster than celebrate his own run of good form.
