Trevor Hemmings' famous green, yellow and white silks were carried to a poignant first victory since the legendary owner’s death by Iron Bridge at Ffos Las.

The five-year-old made an impressive hurdling debut for the Jonjo O’Neill stable when landing the second division of the 2m4f maiden hurdle under jockey Richie McLernon.

"He was looking down on me today," McLernon told Sky Sports Racing. "Trevor has been good to me since I came to England – I was very sad when he passed away.

“Mr Hemmings got me started in Ireland in point-to-points on a horse called Arctic Times. It was poignant to ride a winner in these colours. I’m delighted.”

Hemmings was synonymous with star chasers having owned three Grand National winners and McLernon described the winning son of Milan as a "proper national hunt horse."

O'Neill and McLernon enjoyed a double having also landed the first division of the maiden hurdle with Monbeg Genius.

Carver comeback

Bryan Carver rode his first winner since coming back from injury after the Harry Fry trained-Forever Blessed made a winning debut in the 2m juvenile hurdle.

The 23-year-old jockey fractured his T7 vertebrae when being unseated cantering down to the start at Newton Abbot in July.

“I'm delighted to get the first one back, it was well needed.” said Carver.

“Hopefully that'll get the season going and I'll go on a bit of a roll. The short term aim will be to ride out my claim – I've got seven [winners] left.”

On the 11-length winner he added: “He's done very well today considering he's never been on a racecourse before.

“It's an unusual pedigree you wouldn't expect to see a three-year-old, by Zoffany, first time out at Ffos Las in a juvenile hurdle.”
