Track ace Haggas has to settle for dead-heat but Young Rascal promises plenty
William Haggas has won more races than anybody at Newbury this year but as the track's Flat season drew to a close the top Newmarket trainer had to settle for a share of the spoils when Young Rascal and Morando dead-heated in the Group 3 Teddington Royal British Legion Stakes.
Haggas had looked like netting his 16th outright winner at the Berkshire venue when Young Rascal drew clear of the field under Jim Crowley, but Rob Hornby had not given up on the Andrew Balding-trained Morando, forcing a decision in the race perhaps better known as the St Simon Stakes.
"I kind of hit the line awkwardly and Jim's horse was down and mine was up, so I'm happy to share the pot," said Hornby, whose views were shared by Balding's wife Anna Lisa, revelling in the fine form of the stable, which had a winner at Doncaster and were not far off capturing the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud with Fox Tal.
