Bob Mahler grabs dramatic photo-finish win in Musselburgh's Edinburgh National
Racegoers at Musselburgh were left stunned after Bob Mahler snatched the most unlikely victory on the line in the bet365 Edinburgh National.
The race looked certain to be in the hands of Chic Name as Jonathan Burke moved the eight-year-old into a lead over the final fence. A total of £510 was traded at the basement odds of 1.01 on the Betfair exchange.
Adrian Heskin and Bob Mahler seemed to be running a decent race in third – five lengths behind the leader – but they flew home in the final furlong of the gruelling 4m1f contest, snatching victory by a short-head in a photo-finish.
A packed Musselburgh crowd roared home the Warren Greatrex-trained runner, who was backed into 9-2 joint-favourite from a morning price of 6-1.
It gave Greatrex a change of fortune after he had gone 30 days without a winner, enduring 27 consecutive defeats.
Greatrex said: "I brought Missed Approach here a couple of years ago and Bob Mahler is a very similar sort. I was adamant he would stay the trip and he's needed every yard of it.
"Missed Approach went on from here to win the Kim Muir and that could be a possibility for Bob Mahler. He's a dour stayer; he's taken his time to come to hand but he's a proper horse.
"I've had loads of seconds and thirds and hopefully this bodes well for tomorrow [La Bague Au Roi runs in the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup] in Ireland."
