Three-time Group 1 winner Dylan Mouth makes mark in Britain
Topweight Dylan Mouth, who won three Group 1s when trained in Italy by Stefano Botti, made his first win in Britain a crucial one, as he emphatically claimed a furiously run Old Newton Cup under Harry Bentley at odds of 25-1.
Dylan Mouth, who has been trained by Stefano’s brother Marco since April last year, first ran in Britain when last of seven in Postponed’s King George but has been winless since victory in the Group 2 Gran Premio di Milano last May.
The six-year-old entire found his feet in a race ran at a rapid pace, as early leader Soldier In Action was taken on by Farquhar, who strode clear a long way from home.
Favourite Shraaoh, Big Country, Kapstadt and the Queen's runner Fabricate were among those to close, but none of them had a response for Dylan Mouth, who stormed clear in the final furlong to claim the £100,000 prize.
Soldier In Action, who won over hurdles before contesting the Triumph Hurdle for Nicky Henderson in March, clung on to second, with 9-2 favourite Shraaoh in third and Blakeney Point grabbing fourth at 25-1.
'It all went smoothly'
Winning jockey Harry Bentley said: "He is a proper horse, he's rated 104 for a reason. Off top weight there's a bit of a worry that he's in no man's land but he has done everything very well today.
"He's a big, solid horse so the weight's not been a problem. I got a good run through, I was in the last quarter of the field but they went nice gallop up front which helped us. It all went smoothly."
Deirdre Johnston, wife of trainer Mark, praised second-placed Soldier In Action: "That's four seconds in a row for Alan Spence – Thursday night at Epsom, Friday at Sandown and now two today.
"But it was a very good run and he's really genuine – I thought he was going to get swallowed up two out but he kept finding, he's a real trier."
