Three judges deliver their verdict on Footpad's fall and Saint Calvados

It's a shame to see Footpad run like that because he was such a brilliant novice last season. He seemed to come alive when he approached his fences but that spark just wasn't there for whatever reason. Fingers crossed Willie Mullins can get him back to the horse he was last season, but take nothing away from Saint Calvados – he is seriously good in this type of race. He obviously went off far too quick in the Arkle, and if there is a horse who is going to catch Altior out in the Tingle Creek, he could be it.
Tom Park, Ante-Post Focus

Saint Calvados was impressive and bookmakers who now have him as second favourite for the Tingle Creek behind Altior, and in front of Un De Sceaux, have it right. He should come on for this winning reappearance and it may even twist Nicky Henderson’s arm when it comes to deciding whether to give the Tingle Creek favourite a run before Sandown. As for Footpad, suffering an over-reach so early in the race means a line should be drawn through this, although it remains to be seen how quickly he is back on song and it would be wise to hang fire on the ante-post front.
Andrew Scutts, news editor

Saint Calvados was impressive. I backed him for the Tingle Creek about a week ago and he must be a serious player at Sandown now. I thought he had Footpad in trouble before he fell at the last but it is difficult to say for sure what would have happened. Ruby Walsh’s reaction certainly suggests he felt he had more horse underneath. Connections might look to step up in trip now but I would keep him at two miles. He was outstanding at the trip last season and he should come on from this if none the worse for the fall and the over-reach he suffered.
