Threat has Hannon planning for Guineas after Gimcrack glory

Richard Hannon has never hidden his belief in Threat, but after the colt's clearcut success in the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes the Classic-winning trainer could not help but look to the future with the 2,000 Guineas hope.

Sent off the 6-4 favourite for the 6f contest after finishing a close second in both the Coventry and Richmond Stakes, the Cheveley Park-owned juvenile was always travelling kindly under Oisin Murphy before kicking clear to win by a length and three-quarters.

Hannon, who admitted to being hugely disappointed after Threat's defeat at Goodwood, said: "I've told enough people how good I thought the horse is. I was gutted at Goodwood but he got warm there.

"I've never seen a bad horse win the Gimcrack or even a moderate horse; they have to be very good. He's danced every dance and has been second to some very decent animals."

"It's nice to see him win a good race. I remember watching it [Richmond Stakes] with Chris [Richardson, Cheveley Park's racing manager] and I walked away; someone could have kicked me 30 times and I wouldn't have noticed. I was numb.

"It's only a horse race and you've got to pick yourself up and come out and find another one. That's what good horses do."

Bought at the 2017 Tattersalls December Foal Sales, the imposing chestnut has repaid his connections' faith and is now a 16-1 shot (from 33-1) for next year's 2,000 Guineas. It just so happens his trainer is keen for him to bloom during his Classic year and not before.

He added: “He’s in all sorts of races – the Champagne [Stakes], the Dewhurst – but he doesn’t have to run in any of them. We'll work back from next year, from something like the Guineas. He's a stallion now and has won his big races as a two-year-old.”

Outsider Tamreer Fells punters

Tamreer's 33-1 win in the opening Sky Bet Handicap came as a welcome surprise to owners Arcane Racing Partnership given their closeness to the Knavesmire.

Tamreer had finished third in the Listed Pontefract Castle Fillies' Stakes in June but was lining up in what is a traditionally competitive handicap.

The Roger Fell-trained filly was given a confident ride by Ben Curtis to beat Corelli by a head at the line, with the 4-1 favourite Caradoc another head away in third.

Part-owner Ben Fellows said: "Roger rang us before Christmas and he knew he had a nice horse as he said, 'I've got a nice filly for you, but you can only have 50 per cent.' She's done us proud today and we're chuffed to bits as this is our local track."

Fell added: "She's put weight on but looks a lot stronger. It's grand to have a winner here; I can't believe it. She's got black type but the only way you could improve on that is to win a Listed race."

Molatham backs up Mums Tipple form

Jim Crowley enjoyed a record-breaking victory on Battaash in the Nunthorpe and made it a quick double when landing the 7f maiden on Molatham, another to run in the colours of Hamdan Al Maktoum.

The son of Night Of Thunder's debut second was considerably boosted by Mums Tipple's 11-length win on Thursday and he pulled clear with Celtic Art, another smartly bred type, which bodes well for his prospects next season.

Trainer Roger Varian said: "I think he's a nice horse and the form before yesterday was starting to work out. The fourth and fifth had won, so after yesterday's result we came here with a bit of pressure!"

The scopey chestnut holds entries for the Royal Lodge and Dewhurst Stakes but, according to his trainer, is very much a prospect for next year.

"He's all about the future as he's got to grow into himself, but he's got a wonderful attitude and that should stand him in good stead. He's got all the entries, but I think we should digest today and see how he comes out of the race."
