'The plan came to fruition' - Ryan Mania delivers as Doyen Breed digs in
Wednesday: Hexham
Sandy Thomson was full of praise for Ryan Mania after he guided Doyen Breed to success on his debut over fences in the 3m novice chase.
The 13-8 shot won only once in nine hurdle starts and was a beaten favourite at Kelso this month, but he showed he may be a different prospect over fences after beating Grade 2-winning hurdler Emitom under Mania, who landed the Paddy Power Gold Cup on Saturday.
The race, which was won last season by Scottish Grand National winner Mighty Thunder, appeared competitive as J'Ai Froid, who recorded a four-timer over hurdles last season, finished third.
"Ryan rode that horse well because he hadn’t schooled well at home, which is why he jumped hurdles up at Kelso," said Thomson. "He's always a lot more professional on the racecourse than he is at home.
"We were hopeful that would be the same today. They just hacked round for a circuit and then he jumped really well after that so the plan came to fruition."
Of Mania, who completed a double on the day aboard the Harriet Graham-trained Shoughall's Boy at 22-1, the trainer added: "Ryan is a huge talent and we’re very lucky to have him."
Smith streak continues
Sue Smith, who provided Mania with his memorable success at Cheltenham with Midnight Shadow, extended her superb run of form when combining with Thomas Willmott for a 168-1 double.
Romeo Brown won the 2m handicap hurdle by 14 lengths on only his second start for the trainer before 25-1 shot Lough Derg Farmer won the 4m handicap chase by a neck carrying the trainer's colours.
