Intercessor struck a complete shock at odds of 200-1 at Newbury, a result which left his elated owner too excited to talk.

The three-year-old finished sixth of seven on his only start at Salisbury but made huge improvement to record a first success in the novice stakes over a mile. Trained by John Gallagher for The LAM Partnership, he was confidently ridden by Cieren Fallon and rallied under pressure to stretch his head in front as five crossed the line within inches of each other.

He denied the hot favourite Nasraawy, who cost connections a whopping $725,000. Intercessor cost just 10,000gns. He was sent off with an SP of 200-1 but at a whopping 611-1 on the Betfair Exchange.

"I'd be lying if I said I expected that," said Gallagher. "The thing is, he gets a bit lit up and buzzy at home. We ran him last year just because we needed to run him. He's a big strong horse, they gave him a soft lead and he just galloped along. To be fair he picked up.

"The owner bred him and he's made up. He's had some money on him so he's very happy. I spoke to him on the phone but he's too excited to talk any sense, I'll try him a bit later.

"200-1 in a ten-runner race was a big price but he's been brave and done it well so we're delighted."

Cieren Fallon, riding his fifth winner of the season, added: "That was a pleasant surprise. He had the experience from his run before. He jumped out well enough, I was happy to let him bowl along.

"It's a nice, even, galloping track so I made sure to get my fractions right and let him stretch at the three [furlong pole] and he's battled really well. He showed he's got a great attitude."
