That's what it's all about: Joe a National wonder for Doyle and Hamilton
Sunday: Sedgefield
Hewick had dazzled the States in winning the American Grand National on Saturday, but the National star in County Durham was All About Joe, who stormed home from off the pace to take Sedgefield's most prestigious prize, the 3m5f Durham National, for owner-trainer Andrew Hamilton.
All About Joe travelled in midfield under Alan Doyle and made his challenge at the second-last before breaking clear of the front-running Raddle And Hum. From there the seven-year-old kept on gamely to deliver Doyle his most-important career victory and cap a remarkable turnaround for the jockey after a stint in rehab in 2020.
Doyle made clear on Sky Sports Racing it was definitely the biggest success of his career, adding of the winner: "For a very small horse he's very, very good to jump."
Staying on script
Classy Flat recruit Scriptwriter made his hurdles debut a winning one for new trainer Milton Harris in the 2m1f juvenile maiden under Paddy Brennan.
A year ago the three-year-old, formerly trained by Aidan O'Brien, was contesting the Group 3 Autumn Stakes, finishing behind subsequent 2,000 Guineas winner Coroebus, and he joined Harris's string just a week ago.
Harris believes the win, by two and a quarter lengths, will do the gelding "a world of good", adding: "I would love to say I was always confident he could translate his potential over jumps – let's just say, I am now!
"I'd say he'll go to the October meeting at Cheltenham now. Paddy is adamant he's a very good horse. I wouldn't read anything into the distance he's won by because just getting his head in front will do him a world of good."
