Temple Church has an extraordinarily rich tradition to maintain after taking the mile conditions race won in the past by a host of top-class colts including Shergar.

The Haynes, Hanson & Clark Stakes has been struggling lately to live up to past glories. However, while a finish fought out by two maidens – there were four non-runners on account of ground bordering on heavy – suggests a weak renewal, Hughie Morrison has high hopes for Temple Church.

Morrison, who credited former trainer James Toller with picking out the Lawman colt at the sales, said: “I think we would be doing a disservice to the race if we weren't discussing a Derby trial next spring.
