Election Day proved a favourable one for the racecourse – but not for backers of the horse of that name.

Given Friday’s news that John Caldwell, the controversial chairman of the Musselburgh Joint Racing Committee, had lost in the local elections and will now be replaced, Election Day would have been an apt winner. But the 4-5 chance failed to follow the script, finishing a disappointing third in the 1m1f handicap.

Instead it was Euro Nightmare who landed the spoils, coming from well off the pace under Phillip Makin to defeat Jamacho.
