A small slice of turf history was the order of the day after Sugar Plum Fairy landed a big-priced gamble when coming from way off the pace to lift the second division of the 5½f handicap for owner-breeder Lisa Judd.

The three-year-old filly is the last ever foal sired by the prolific Group 1-winning stallion Halling, and Judd explained: “Halling had been retired from stud duties but I somehow arranged for him to cover the mare Atyaab, and Sugar Plum Fairy is the result.”

Judd, whose horses run under the Wedgewood Estates moniker, added: “I've around ten in training, mostly with Tony Carroll, and this filly is gradually getting her act together as this was only her seventh career start. Hopefully she'll go on from here.”
