Mad keen to post and not a great deal more tractable during the race, last season’s Fred Winter runner-up Style De Garde nevertheless made a winning start to life over fences with a bold front-running display in the 2m beginners’ chase.

Despite his keenness to get on with the job, Style De Garde was neat and nimble at his fences and connections are hopeful he can progress into a smart chaser.

"He ran clean away with me but his jumping is class,” said jockey James Bowen. "He was just too fresh but he settled towards the end of last season and I think he’ll do the same this season. His jumping was immaculate and he’s got a future over fences."
