Stewards in action after Canford makes all

There was a controversial start to the day when the Micky Hammond-trained Canford Thompson was gifted a long lead in the juvenile hurdle and proceeded to make all the running to win at 20-1.

The stewards inquired into the race and interviewed the riders of the other finishers. Brian Hughes, Brian Harding, Noel Fehily and Tom Scudamore all told them that they were riding horses who could race keenly, needed cover and were doubtful stayers, while Trevor Whelan said that his mount, Rue Balzac, hadn't jumped too well on his previous start and his instructions were to get cover and a lead into the hurdles.

The stewards were satisfied that the riders had all made every effort to close on the leader from the third last and that having got within three lengths of him, they were unable to make any further inroads. The explanations were noted and no action was taken.
