Although there wasn't a dream start for Paul Nicholls’ first ever two-year-old runner Whataguy, the former champion jumps trainer took a positive view of the performance despite the fact the juvenile finished last.

Following a smart break and showing plenty of pace under the trainer’s daughter Megan, he tired in the very testing conditions, but was only beaten just over three lengths behind the well supported winner Steeve in the 5f novice contest.

Nicholls said: “We knew he'd improve a lot for the experience and he looked big and well in the preliminaries beforehand. It’s down to the fact that we've been unable to give him any work on turf as the ground has been so bad.
