Star shines to end five-year lean spell for trainer Edwards

On an afternoon that Sir Anthony McCoy was at the Somerset course to see Yanworth take the feature, it was fitting that trainer Gordon Edwards, who supplied the former champion jockey with his first British win, should strike with Shanann Star in the 3m1f handicap chase.

Edwards was responsible for putting McCoy on Chickabiddy at Exeter in 1994, but he has only two horses in his care now and the Minehead-based farrier had been without success under rules for five years until the Page Fuller-partnered mare came to his rescue.

He said: "I think my last winner was a horse called Consulate back in 2012. I've had to take things a bit easy over the last year or so as I had to have a hip operation, which completely ruled me out of last season.
