Stakes-class aim for A Ma Chere after debut win for Weld in opener

Anyone fond of maidens will have been delighted by racing at the Curragh on Friday evening, with the first five races for horses without a win and the opening contest for juvenile fillies looks likely to produce its fair share of winners.

Only a couple of lengths separated the first five home, but the performance of winner A Ma Chere was impressive as she overcame debut greenness and quickened smartly inside the final furlong to beat fellow newcomer Palifico by a neck under Oisin Orr.

The homebred filly is out of Mad About You, who was runner-up in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Pretty Polly Stakes for the stable, and trainer's son and assistant Kris Weld said: "She's by far the nicest progeny of Mad About You we've had. She did it well in the end but she was very green."
