Spencer on mark with Sleek before heading for evening shift

Any punters who noted Jamie Spencer had journeyed to the Surrey venue for just one ride were well rewarded when the Luca Cumani-trained filly So Sleek stuck to her task in the gamest fashion to take the spoils in the 1m3½f fillies’ maiden.

However, it was not all plain sailing for Spencer as the winner was widest of all in stall 12 and it needed all of the rider’s guile and skill in the saddle to get across and give the filly every chance of winning.

Things panned out well for the combination, though, as they managed to secure an early position not far off the pace with Spencer asking for an effort in the home straight before leading over a furlong out and staying on well to see off Nathalie.
