Spangled provides some solace for Varian

Postponed was supposed to have been the star turn for the Roger Varian yard in the King George at Ascot, but after he was ruled out during the week with a respiratory infection it was left to Spangled to provide a welcome success here in the 7f fillies' handicap.

The four-year-old had to concede weight all round but fought hard for a short-head victory.

Varian's assistant Will Johnson said: "You take a winner on a big day, no matter where it is. This filly has shown a lot at home and hopefully after a win like that can measure up in black type."
