South Pacific and Seamie Heffernan storm home in King George V Stakes
South Pacific stayed on well under Seamie Heffernan to lead home a 1-2-3 for Aidan O'Brien in the King George V Stakes.
Ryan Moore appeared to have made a race-winning move on the O'Brien-trained Constantinople, but 22-1 shot South Pacific came with a strong run from off the pace to pass his fancied stablemate in the 1m4f handicap.
Eminence chased home the front two with the Mark Johnston-trained Persian Moon the best of the rest in fourth.
It was a first win in the race for the Ballydoyle trainer and his fourth winner of this year’s royal meeting.
O'Brien said: "The horse is progressing. He was a little bit of a baby but is coming along well. He was very happy going a mile and a half and might stay further even.
"All of the first three will progress. They ran off nice marks and we might go for another handicap with them."
It was also a first winner of the week for Derby-winning rider Heffernan, who partnered Anthony Van Dyck to win the Epsom Classic earlier this month.
Heffernan said: "I wasn't always confident but in fairness to the horse he dug deep.
"I took a chance switching out. You need a brave horse to switch out and keep going because when most horses switch out they don't often finish – but he did."
