Hughie Morrison celebrates historic landmark after saddling 1,000th winner
Monday: Catterick
Hughie Morrison celebrated the 1,000th winner of his glittering training career when odds-on favourite Miss Fairfax eased to victory in the 3m1½f mares novice hurdle.
Morrison, who has scored at the top-level on the Flat and over jumps with the likes of Pastoral Pursuits, Sakhee's Secret and more recently with Not So Sleepy, brought up the milestone just shy of 25 years since saddling his first winner, Tayovullin, at Southwell on April 1, 1997.
Morrison, who was not at Catterick on Monday but instead viewing a two-year-old in pre-training, said: "You can't be too self-centred about it, and the main thing to think through is to remember everybody who's been involved. There's so many people far and wide that have made this happen.
"A personal highlight for me was seeing Alcazar win a Group 1 at the age of ten because he was made of glass. Pastoral Pursuits was as good as I've trained and seeing the horse I bred win at the Cheltenham Festival, Frenchman's Creek, was an extraordinary day too."
Call avoids fall
Can You Call overcame a heart-stopping blunder at the final fence to break his chasing duck in the 2m3f handicap chase.
Relieved winning trainer Evan Williams said: "He had a very bad fall at Hereford and the last run he was very nervous remembering the fall. Sometimes a fall helps. I can’t ever say it helps a trainer, but it can help a horse."
Progressive novice
The feature 3m1f handicap chase worth £25,000 went to the Alex Hales-trained Omar Maretti, who could be aimed at the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival or the novice handicap chase on Midlands National day at Uttoxeter next month.
