Smullen tight-lipped over Bolger's criticism of 1,000 Guineas ride
Pat Smullen declined to comment on strong criticism of his riding in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, delivered by Jim Bolger on At The Races in the wake of the Classic, in which the trainer's Bean Feasa was badly hampered after two furlongs.
The incident involved Smullen's mount Rehana and Hydrangea, ridden by Padraig Beggy, along with Bean Feasa, partnered by Kevin Manning.
Rehana, who finished fifth, was relegated to sixth and Bean Feasa promoted to fifth, with Smullen incurring a one-day ban for careless riding.
Speaking before the outcome of the stewards' inquiry was known, Bolger said: "It should never have happened and it was very obviously dangerous riding. I don't know what the outcome is but it was disgraceful riding.
"The filly's fine but it could have been otherwise and there was absolutely no need for it whatsoever.
"Pat Smullen had the whole track under him and decided to play jockey by taking out the two on his inside. There's no excuse for that sort of carry-on."
Asked if he wished to reply to Bolger's criticism, Smullen said: "I'd prefer not to comment."
