'She’s been crying out for the extra distance' - Karl Burke warms up for York
Friday: Wolverhampton
On a sweltering day Sweet Fortune skipped home for Karl Burke’s in-form yard in the opener ahead of their big-race targets at York’s Ebor meeting.
It was a fine performance from the two-year old filly, who stayed on stoutly to overhaul Estehwadh in the final furlong, winning her first race at the fifth attempt
“We’re very pleased with her, she’s been crying out for the extra distance,” said Burke. “I spoke to Jonny Peate in the morning and I thought the wide draw wasn’t a bad thing for her.
“I told him whatever happens don’t get caught off a slow pace and boxed in down the back. He listened and he rode her really well and went forward at exactly the right time.”
Back with a bang
The regally bred William Haggas-trained Mellow Yellow posted an impressive performance in the feature 1m1½f novice stakes, putting down a marker in the royal colours ahead of tougher assignments.
The daughter of Dubawi, who holds entries in the Group 2 Blandford Stakes and Group 1 Fillies & Mares on British Champions Day, took up the lead smoothly and held off late competition from Misty Dancer to register a classy victory after a 328-day layoff.
The second favourite, Infinitive, for Derby-winning duo Richard Kingscote and Sir Michael Stoute, clipped heels and unseated the rider early in the race. Both Kingscote and the horse were unharmed.
Brittain’s drought ends
Antony Brittain overturned a 55-day winless streak thanks to Eldeyaar in the 6f three-year-old handicap.
Ridden for the first time by Ray Dawson after regular partner Cam Hardie was stuck in traffic, Eldeyaar delivered an authoritative performance from the front, comfortably fending off Primo and Chester Le Streak.
