'She's a lovely mare' - Acheson team continue red-hot form with Magic Daze

Brian Acheson's Robcour team have enjoyed a purple patch with some high-class youngsters in recent weeks, and the owner has found another exciting sort in the shape of Magic Daze, who produced a smart performance to land the opening mares' maiden hurdle at Clonmel on Tuesday.

Trained by Henry de Bromhead and ridden by Rachael Blackmore, the former point-to-point winner built on her Leopardstown third to Gaillard Du Mesnil over Christmas to take advantage of a good opportunity as 4-9 favourite, scoring by nine lengths.

"She's a lovely mare and did it really well," said the winning trainer after the five-year-old jumped boldly in the heavy going.

"It's probably not her ideal ground but it's great to see her do it. She jumped brilliantly, she's a real chaser in the making."

Magic Daze was Robcour's fourth winner from 13 runners in the past fortnight and they enjoyed a Grade 1 breakthrough last week when Bob Olinger won the Lawlor's of Naas Novice Hurdle.

Off to a flyer

Waterford native John Flavin made a dream start to his career as a trainer when sending out the well-backed Street Value to score on handicap debut under Hugh Morgan as 7-2 favourite.

Having his first runner since taking over the licence from his father Pat, Flavin was previously a conditional jockey with Michael Hourigan, Richard Guest and Evan Williams before fracturing his skull in a fall at Wetherby in 2006.

"I have about 15 in, split between horses for the track and point-to-points," he said, while also leading up the winner.

"My father had the licence before and his last runners were at Tramore on New Year's Day. I did the trainers' course on Zoom during last summer."

He added: "With a circuit to go I thought we could be in trouble but he's just a big, honest baby."

Broomfields breeze

The ultra-consistent Broomfields Jeremy won by the biggest margin of the day, creating an excellent impression when putting it all together to score in the 2m3f novice hurdle under Robbie Power for trainer Philip Dempsey.

American raider French Light ran creditably on softer than ideal ground to claim second, but the winner, having not gone unbacked in the early markets at 7-2, struck in a manner that suggested there could be a nice pot to be won with him.

Welcome tonic

A week on from suffering an injury after a fall at home, Cork trainer Paul O'Flynn enjoyed a welcome winner in the shape of game front-runner Quarry Lil under a fine Gary Noonan ride.

O'Flynn's father Tom said: "It'll take time to recover but he'll be fine. I'd like to thank everyone in the yard with the boss being out – they got us here today after a rough week."
